How To Plan A 1st Birthday Party

Who knew that planning a child’s first birthday party can be such a headache! There’s the guest list, the food, decoration, cake, giftbags, backdrop, location etc etc.. and not to mention the standards that a new mum like me have to live up to in this day and age!

Have you guys seen recent birthday parties being held? The numerous helium balloons(which are not cheap!), the RM500 fondant designer cake, the dessert station, the party accessories, goodie bags? It all seems a bit too much and ridiculous, and yet here i am scouting for all these things. I mean, a mum only wants what’s best for her child no? And even though he probably won’t remember his first birthday party, i still want it to be the best 1st birthday party (that i can afford).

I know that there are probably many mums who are scratching their head about their kid’s first birthday, so hopefully this post will help a tiny bit in terms of planning. Here are the steps that I personally took.

No. 1- Pick A Party Date

First up for me was picking a date. Eidrix’s birthday is on the 22nd of November and it falls on a Wednesday. So i decided to have the party the weekend before. Why? i don’t know.. I just liked the idea and thought 18 was a good date.

No. 2 – Create A Guest List

It’s his first birthday party and you want to invite the whole world! But NO! The number of pax also plays a role on your budget and is linked to the amount of food you have to prepare and is linked to the size of the location, linked to the amount of goodie bags, and you get the picture.. This is why your guest list is one of the most crucial part of planning a party. As for me, I have close to 80 adults and 40 kids (okay i’m just realising that’s a lot!!) on the list, and these are just close family and friends!

No. 3- Set A Budget

Look at your number of pax and pick a budget! In my case i didn’t actually know what kind of budget i was going for until i did some research for the things that i want to have in the party. Some of these things include: candy or dessert table, backdrop, goodie bags, type of food, location, table and chairs, khemah etc etc.. there are a number of things to look at depending how you want it to be and where you want it to be.

No. 4- Choose A Location

If you read my previous post on not being a landed house person, you’d know that i stay in a condominium. At the beginning we were set at having it at an outdoor hall near the pool area of my condo, but came to learn that the management did not allow any functions to be held there anymore ever since there were complains of noise and rubbish. Instead they offered a small dark purple room, which i wasn’t too happy about.

So anyway, there are a few things to consider when picking a location, for example if i were to have it at home, i would have needed to look for a caterer, source out decoration(hire or DIY is another thing to think about) and the dessert table, look for tables and chairs for people to sit- all of them separately. So i decided to look for a location that could fit my number of packs, that already has tables and chairs and would be a plus if they did catering too!

Another thing that i was looking at was a space or section for kids because most of my family and friends also have young children and having a space to let them loose without worry was one of my top priority as well!

After searching high and low and looking at some ridiculously expensive spaces and packages, we decided on TedBoy Bakery at The School in Jaya One (this is NOT a sponsored post) which basically had the whole package: Party space, F&B, dessert table, backdrop, themed cake and they had a room for kids to play in too! Although it was slightly above my budget, it was a price i had to pay to minimize my headache and i think very much worth it.

No. 5- The Little Details

Luckily for me, i took a package that already included all the little details such as: F&B, dessert table, cake and birthday backdrop- so there was no need to pening kepala about all these things. The only other thing that i wanted to have is goodie bags for the kids. So i found an Instagram profile that did custom made designs for paper bags and ordered 50 just for the kids. It wasn’t that expensive.. only RM25 for 50 pcs which is awesome!

These are things that i went through so far. His birthday is this weekend and i can’t wait! Hope everything goes smoothly! Pray for me guys!
