#CurvyConfidence: Joanne Kam’s Message To Women Who Have A Problem Accepting Their Body

Queen of comedy Malaysia

Joanne Kam is a name that we are all too familiar with in world of comedy. Her unique style and acid tongue humour earned her a reputation as the Queen of Comedy on the Malaysian stage. Besides her risque jokes, her outfits too are a statement of their own. Daring and confident is what i would describe it as. She also seems to know exactly what would suit her body and her curve and that’s what i love about her! I recently interviewed her about her confidence and style and here’s what she had to say:

You’re a woman that exudes confidence, what’s your secret?

Being on stage at a very young age, I was 19, my first job was a performer in a theme park in Singapore. Every day I had to go out and entertain people on the street of the park. So i had to fake my confidence to handle the crowd. Little by little your confidence in yourself will grow.

Describe your own personal syle?

Sexy and sassy. I love tight fitting clothes that shows my figure.

What’s the one thing that every plus size woman should have in their closet?

A good bra that fills you the right way and a good body corset for when you really need it to hold all your ‘babat’.

Where is your favourite place to shop for clothes?

I am lucky enough to be able to wear XL in some local brands but I still prefer my shopping online namely boohoo and Asos they both have very up to date styles for plus size and I really don’t like the plus size labels in Malaysia because everything is very bland and not hip enough.

Your favourite piece of clothing you own?

Oh right now its shorts and more shorts! Hahah! But only coz its easy. But I also do have my party dresses that I love!

The most unflattering piece of clothing you’ve worn?

So far most of the stylist that picks pieces for me are aware of my style or I bring my own clothes. However if you talk about unflattering, I do have some oversize shirts that makes me look pregnant everytime I wear them. So even though they are extremely comfy, I only wear them to do groceries and to the market.

What do you think is most flattering for your body shape?

Tops that show off my cleavage and just tight enough to be noticeable, but yet loose enough to cover any unwanted bulge. Below the knees skirts as well as Skinny jeans are great!

“I am most confident when……”

I am on stage performing to any crowd

What is your definition of body acceptance?

Body acceptance is when you are able to stand in front of the mirror and actually start liking what you see. It can be a difficult process because even the most skinniest woman will find something to hate about their body and honestly it can be as small as a zit. So I guess it starts when we remind ourselves that what’s staring back at us is actually ‘Not that bad’.

Did you have any unpleasant incidents while you were growing up in regards to your weight/body/ appearance? How did you overcome it?

Of course I was a fat child at the age of 11 and 12. My mom couldn’t find clothes in the teen department so I end up shopping in adults section and she made me wear adult male pants ( I don’t know why ). Oh I think coz even adult female pants were too small for me.

How I overcame it was when I started working in the entertainment dept of the Spore theme park. My fellow colleagues who was more senior took me under their wing and taught me how to do make-up and also helped me with picking out the right styles for my plus size frame.

What would you tell your daughter if someone bullied her about her size or her body type/shape?

My daughter is also plus size and she gets constant request from her teachers to lose weight. Her friends are also all skinnier than her. It’s a process still, but I remind her how amazing she is and that being big is nothing to be ashamed of.

What would you like to say to women who have a problem accepting their own body?

If you cannot accept your own body, how are people going to see the amazing person that you are? The fact is, we all love food, and dieting or eating healthy can be a good start, but if we think we need to lose 30kgs to feel good about ourselves and then don’t achieve it, you will think you have failed and continue on a spiral down. However, if you start accepting your weight and your body, and make an effort to groom and pay importance towards how you can look good in your own style and size, you will be surprised at how people will pay attention and enjoy your company more.

I have walked into a room where there are tons of pretty skinny girls around and I still get a lot of attention from men. More in fact, because they are attracted to confident and wit.

So hold your head high… look good with the correct style for your body and charm them because don’t forget, You have everything they have, just doubled-up. So might as well use it to its fullest potential and be Body Proud.
