4 Reasons Why Plus Size Women (or maybe just me) Dislike Wearing Bright Colours

Few days ago, i posted a historical moment on my Instagram. For the first time in my life, i actually wore YELLOW! And it wasn’t just a top that you could pair with some denim jeans.. nope.. i went all out with a bright yellow dress! Why is it such a big deal? Well, it’s kind of a step forward for me because i hardly wear bright colours at all due to some of the reasons that i’m about to list down. I’m usually a confident person with my personal style and choices, but this time was different.. i was actually nervous stepping out of the house… i kept asking my husband if the colour is alright… while walking towards my car i felt like everyone was starring at all my fats and rolls with disgust… which was weird because i’ve never felt so insecure…

As i drove my car to work, it was already too late to change.. So instead, i decided to change my attitude and just fake my confidence for the day. At work, comments came pouring in.. “wow! So bright!”, “Oh my goodness so bright! Chinese say you can scare the ghost away with that!” ERRKKK! Well that didn’t boost my confidence at all! HAHA! But a friend of mine ensured that it was”OK LAH!” Wasn’t as bad as i made it seem, she said. Well anyway, that particular day inspired me to write this post. These are the reasons that i realised along the way on why most of us (plus size) women (or maybe just me) dislike wearing bright colours.

You tend to get dirt/ make-up on it easily… And it’s FREAKING hard to get rid off!

I was doing my make up in the car when i realised this. First, my brow pencil fell and made a brown line in the middle of my chest.. then when i wanted to wipe some make-up off my fingers, i didn’t have anywhere to wipe it off! (Yes, i have this habit of wiping my fingers on my dark colour tops/skirt/dress.. Bahahaha!) So that’s a bummer! LOL

Every crack and fold becomes so BLOODY obvious!

I mean it’s true right.. when you wear dark colours you don’t realise all the folds and the cracks of your tummy or back etc. So when i wore this dress… BAM! Every line, curve and fold was visible.

You have to actually care about the colour of your underwear!

So i picked out my bra and panty just like any other day… put on the dress… checked my self out in the mirror.. and then realised.. Okay, my black bra and panty won’t cut it today! Sigh….. Had to take off my dress and start again! See how hard it is wearing bright colours?!?! Are you guys agreeing with me? Huhu!

You become the centre of attention (Not sure if this is good.. or bad..)

Well… being plus size, i’m obviously a wide canvas. So a wide canvas splattered with bright yellow- you’re bound to get attention right? I mean it probably won’t be that bad for someone who was slim or skinny!

So you’re probably thinking, “Then why buy that dress in the first place?!”

Well, here’s the thing.. The dress was so cheap! And i just love the style of the dress! It’s perfect! It has that knot detail in the middle with drapes that covers your stomach and adds a little volume around my hips area (coz i’m not curvaceous like that). Plus it has long sleeves too! So:

Covers stomach✔️

Covers arms✔️

Adds some curves✔️

= PERFECTO!

The only thing was that it came in either orange or yellow. And i’m not sure why i choose yellow.. but i did.. so here i am…

Let me know what you think! Would you wear something this bright?

  1. No everyone look good in bright colour clothes. But you proof them wrong as you look stylish.

    • aww!! Thank you! took some guts for me to wear this colour that’s for sure!

  2. Well, can’t wear that dress in the presence of royalty. Other than that, you’re good to go, I say!

  3. Babe..you look absolutely gorgeous in that yellow dress…please wear it again and stun those human beings with your curves! Technically, it’s not even plus size people only are afraid of wearing bright colours…even I stay away from colours like baby blue, yellow, orange and green. And gosh..I agree with all your points..coz I have a a bit too of being a clutz.
